Your breakdown insurance should cover some or all of the following.
Basic Cover or Roadside Cover.
- Assistance if you break down more than a set distance from home, typically more than ¼ mile (can be up to 1 mile with some polices)
- Fixing your vehicle at the roadside if possible (most companies will have a set time to try and fix your vehicle at the roadside about an hour maximum.
There is no labour charge for this service, however, if parts, fuel etc are required you will have to pay for these.
- Towing or recovery to a local garage
- No call out charge
- Message service. Some companies include a free messageing service to keep you informed of progress or to inform your friends or family that you have broken down.
Vehicle Recovery.
- Recovery to anywhere in the UK main land, this usually will cover a trailer or caravan if you are towing one at the time of breakdown (size and weight restrictions may apply)
- Transport for you and a maximum number of passengers to a given destination. (maximum number of persons is usually driver plus seven passengers or the maximum legal
carrying capacity of the vehicle
- Recovery to a given destination should the driver become ill during a journey and there be no other drivers in the party.
Home Call Out.
- Breakdown assistance should your car not start at home.
- Assistance should you breakdown near to home which roadside cover does not include.
Onward Travel.
- Replacement car hire to complete your journey. (restricted to one or two days hire typically)
- Insurance for hire car if needed
- Alternative transport costs (restrictions apply to the cost of transport)
- Hotel accommodation, while the car is being fixed (restrictions apply to length of stay and cost of accommodation
